Correcting means making something right that was previously wrong. Well. A dog's correct responce to being on a leash is to pull away. a dogs correct responce when it see something run is to chase it. a dogs correct responce when it wants to greet it's fellow human is to jump up and lick the face. Therefore, we can not correct these things. Becasue the dog was never doing anything wrong. So when you use a coersive measure to 'correct' that is not the case. You can only use a coersive measure in order to change behaviour. The problem is with these punitive training techniques, the dog only changes it's behaviour because to do otherwise causes discomfort (sometimes pain in clumsy hands). Positive reinforcement training doesn't correct behaviour on the understanding that there was nothing incorrect about the dog to start with. By reinforcing desired behaviour, the dog is ore motivated to learn. You are wrong that it is easy to teach a dog tricks but it's hard to teach dogs 'correct' behaviour with clicker. Clicker is relatively simple and fun. People who struggle with it would struggle just the same with dominance techniques - dog handling doesn't come naturally to everyone, but if you get +R wrong, no damage has been done.

I had 1 year using dominace techniques 'effectively' on my rescue dog. Like yours she was 'fixed' the day she came home! But in the 2 that i changed my techniques when i had my wake up call (yeh that's right i went out and hugged a massive oak tree! :0) i want to stand on a mountain top and tell the world how amazing +R and clicker training is. My dog opened up into a free thinking motivated and clever girl! It's so simple too! I can't believe how naive i was before. You simply reinforce the behaviour you want. And you are more likely to get it again and again. Clipping nails, grooming and the vets become a FUN place for the dog to be where they cooperate willingly and are the envy of everyone around. Imagain that - a world where every dog can go to see the vet wagging it's tail! You work with your dog as a team, not as it's master. What a feeling!

When i want fast food, i go to McDonalds and get a crappy burger. When i want a nourshing meal i go to a restaurant where i may have to wait abit longer....but the over all results are much much healthier!

And hey, what's so bad about wanting to be nice?

Re: Dominance Training vs Positive Reinforcement

I like this positive training methods!

Re: Defending the Dog Whisperer

love Caesar!
http://www.dailymotion.com/...

Re: Citronella Anti-bark Collars

Hmnn, interested in a no bark collar for my lab, she barks constatntly when people visit.
http://www.dailymotion.com/...

Re: Picking A Flea Treatment

Hello

I am Tim, I would like to share my best experience of my new discovered product, I just found to my friends referral, as you can see there are too many products out there that is in the market, may it be physical market or online, but the truth is that some of them are toxic and harmful to your pets and even with you, I love my pet and I love my family as well. Science proves that if you train your dog in a positive manner it leads to a confident, happy dog. Using outdated traditional training based on the archaic dominance theory does cause psychological damage to many dogs. This isn't about what methods works faster, many dominance training methods are quick fixes that don't really work in the long term. What it is about is what science proves is the best way to train a dog, and that my friend, is through positive reinforcement only. It is the one true way to train.
